The BMW E65 is the designation for the fourth generation 7 Series full-size luxury sedan produced by BMW. Models such as the Long-Wheelbase E66, BMW High Security E67 and the BMW Hydrogen 7 E68 all share the same chassis. It was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2001 and replaced the previous E38 7 Series that had been in production since July 2001. The new model brought along its own set of controversies regarding its exterior styling and interior tech with the first iDrive system. Despite this, it became the best-selling generation of the 7 Series during its 7 year production run, with a facelift in 2006. The E65 was in development from early 1996, with production specifications finalized in January 1999. Its design was patented on 16 November 2000 and ended production with the release of the F01 7 Series in late 2008. The 7 Series was first released in European markets in November 2001 and then in the US and other countries the following spring in 2002. Issues related to electronics and iDrive soon came to light so, in order to appease customers, BMW bought back numerous 2002 and 2003 7 Series vehicles across the US, extending the factory warranty from the standard 4-Year/50,000-Mile (80,000 km) coverage to 6-Year/100,000-Mile (160,000 km). In the UK, the original 3-year/unlimited-mile coverage remained unchanged.
