The BMW E65 chassis designation is the fourth generation of the 7 Series full-size luxury sedan produced by BMW. Compared to its predecessor, the BMW 7 Series (E38), the BMW E65 7 Series had numerous different variants including the E66 Long-Wheelbase, E67 BMW High Security, and E68 BMW Hydrogen 7. It was first introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2001.

The new 7 Series was met with mixed reviews, as many criticized its aesthetics and the complexity of its iDrive system. However, with a few quality improvements and a facelift in 2006, the BMW E65 7 Series became the best-selling generation of the 7 Series and endured a 7 year production run up to 2008.

Initial release

Development began in early 1996 for the BMW E65 7 Series, with production specifications finalized in January 1999. A patent was filed for the design on the 16th November 2000 with release beginning in Europe in November 2001 and reaching other markets in Spring 2002.

The initial launch of the E65 was plagued with quality issues, which were largely linked to the new iDrive system and its associated electronics. As a result, BMW of North America purchased back a number of 7 Series models from 2002 - 2003 and extended its factory warranty to 6-year/100,000-mi (160,000 km) coverage. UK models were still covered under the original 3-year/unlimited-miles warranty.
