Development of the BMW E65 7 Series started in early 1996, and production specifications finalized in January 1999. Patented in November 2000, production began in Europe in November 2001 and the first cars appeared in the US and other markets in spring 2002. The launch faced criticism due to the controversial looks and the challenging user interface of the iDrive system. Sales of the previous 7 Series model increased in the lead up to the E65 launch. Despite the initial quality issues and customer complaints, the E65 7 series became the best-selling full-size luxury sedan, further boosted by a facelift in 2006. After 7 years of production the E65 was discontinued in late 2008, replaced by the BMW 7 Series (F01). The cost to retool the Dingolfing plant for the E65 was approximately €500,000,000. Initial models were covered by a 4-Year/50,000-Mile (80,000 km) US factory warranty or a 3-Year/Unlimited-Mile UK warranty, however BMW of North America extended the warranty on 2002-03 models to 6-Year/100,000-Mile (160,000 km).
