The BMW E65 7 Series was BMW's fourth generation of full-size luxury sedans, replacing the BMW 7 Series (E38) after production of that model ended in July 2001. At the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2001, the E65 7 Series was unveiled alongside the BMW E53 X5 4.6is, and was the first BMW chassis series to use different chassis numbers for distinct variants such as the E66/E67/E68 for the Long-Wheelbase, BMW High Security and the BMW Hydrogen 7 models respectively. The car was met with much criticism for its avant-garde aesthetics and the steep learning curve of the iDrive system.

Development for the BMW E65 7 Series began in 1996, with production specifications locked by 1999. The car was launched in Europe in November 2001 and appeared in the United States and other markets the following spring. The BMW E65 7 Series saw a production run of 7 years, until it was replaced by the BMW 7 Series (F01) in late 2008.

In order to produce the E65 7 Series, BMW spent approximately €500,000,000 to retool its Dingolfing plant. Initially, the car had several defects that were mostly attributed to the iDrive system, leading BMW to repurchase a substantial amount of 2002-03 7 Series cars in the U.S. and extend their factory warranties from 4-Year/50,000-Mile (80,000 km) coverage to 6-Year/100,000-Mile (160,000 km). In the UK, the E65 7 Series retained its original 3-Year/Unlimited-Miles warranty.
