BMW is demonstrating at the outdoor activities summit meeting in Friedrichshafen how a compact vehicle can balance comfort, usage of space, and enjoyment of sports and leisure, with the introduction of the BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor. This plug-in hybrid also gives a glimpse of drive options that are expected to become available for compact cars in the future. It features BMW's eDrive technology, which has been previously seen in the BMW i8, allowing it to run solely on electric power, thus producing no local emissions. This technology covers all future BMW electric and plug-in hybrid drive systems, in terms of components such as the electric motor (developed locally), a lithium-ion high-performance battery, and an intelligent energy management system. With a combination of combustion engine and electric motor, its impressive average fuel consumption is 2.5 l/100 km (113 mpg imp), with CO2 emissions of under 60 g/km.

On the inside, the variable rear compartment provides everyday usability and enough space for outdoor sports equipment. The hybrid drive system's batteries fitted underneath the load compartment floor makes this possible.
