BMW ActiveE Concept

The 2011 Geneva Motor Show marked the world premier of the BMW ActiveE Concept. Derived from the BMW 1-Series Coupé, this second electric test vehicle from the BMW Group offered the same space and comfort of a traditionally powered BMW, while powered by a fully electric drivetrain. The four-seater BMW ActiveE has a luggage compartment of 200 litres, and occupants enjoy the same head, leg and shoulder room as passengers in a standard BMW 1-Series Coupé. Under the bonnet, the BMW ActiveE is equipped with a powerful electric synchronous motor which generates 168hp and 250Nm of torque, propelling it from zero to 60mph in 9 seconds and a top speed of 90mph. The BMW ActiveE also boasts optimal weight distribution and a low centre of gravity, ensuring maximum traction and power transfer of the high torque. The engine block, transmission and fuel tank are replaced with 3 large energy storage units containing lithium-ion cells - developed by SB LiMotive - and housed in a steel-plate battery housing with an integrated liquid cooling system. This helps maintain the batteries at optimal operating temperature and ensures that the BMW ActiveE meets the same stringent safety standards as the BMW 1-Series Coupé.
