In 1983, BMW determined to put the M88/3 engine - a modified version of the M88/1 previously used in the BMW M1 car - in the E24 chassis of the 6-Series, thus creating the M6. This model was praised for its extravagant and aggressive "shark-nose" design, its deluxe interiors and its quick-speed performance. It is possible to identify the M6 from other E24 models due to the larger air dam, M6 badges on the grille and rear, as well as a discreet spoiler. In the United States, the E24 M6 was equipped with the catalysed S38 engine, offering 256 hp (191 kW) and 243 ft·lbf (329 N·m) of torque. Whereas, the European version, not needing catalysts, was capable of delivering 286 hp (213 kW) and 251 ft·lbf (340 N·m) of torque. Generally, a 0-60 mph (97 km/h) was completed in 6.4 and 6.8 seconds in the European and the American versions, respectively. However, Car and Driver Magazine tested the US M6 in July 1987 and attained a 0-60 mph (97 km/h) time of 6.1 seconds. In 1987, Road and Track magazine featured the US M6 as one of the 10 fastest cars in America. Topping out production of the M6 in 1989, 5,855 cars had been sold, with 1,767 being North American (U.S. & Canada) models.
