BMW M1 Procar

The BMW M1 is a legendary supercar, famed for being the first and only BMW developed with a mid-engine platform. Featuring a twin-cam M88/1 3.5-litre 6-cylinder engine - an engine which was later introduced in the E24 BMW M6/M635CSi and E28 BMW M5 automobiles - the engine houses six separate throttle butterflies, four valves per cylinder and produces an impressive 277 PS (204 kW) of power. With an impressive top speed of 260 km/h (162 mph), a turbocharged racing version can generate up to 850 hp. Created and hand-built between the years 1978 and 1981, the M1 was born from the Motorsport division of BMW as a homologation special for sports car racing. The iconic design was inspired by the 1972 BMW Turbo show car and was originally set to be created by Lamborghini - until BMW took back the project, after 7 prototypes were made. In total, only 456 production M1's were ever built. Despite its limited success in competitive racing, the BMW M1 is still recognised for its excellent on-road performance; its superb handling and a build-quality that echoes BMW's high standards. In 2004, the BMW M1 Procar was consecrated by Sports Car International as the 10th best sports car of the 1970s.
