BMW M3

When August 1985 rolled around, Germany's car magazines and enthusiasts alike began to get excited for the BMW 3 Series to get its most powerful iteration yet. What was revealed about the M3 had people talking: a sports car capable of delivering 200 horsepower, with a top speed of over 230km/h and a 0-100km/h acceleration of 6.7 seconds. Despite assertions that the 3 Series would need to be turbocharged to be a part of the "A Team," the BMW M3 project launched just a few months before. Eberhard Kuenheim, BMW CEO, wanted a successor to the M1 mid-engine sports car and commissioned its design when he paid a visit to Motorsport GmbH. According to legend, Kuenheim said farewell, adding almost as an afterthought, “Mr. Rosche, we need a sporty engine for the 3 Series.” Paul Rosche, managing director of technical development for Motorsport GmbH, accepted the challenge. After all, his company had already engineered the M5 Series saloons, as well as the Formula 1 turbo engine that powered Nelson Piquet to a World Championship victory in 1983. The wait was longer than expected, but it all paid off when the BMW M3 was released. It went on to be the most successful touring car ever in motor-sport and prove the pundits wrong who said it couldn't compare to turbocharged engines.
