BMW has taken car performance to a new level with the debut of the 2008 BMW M3 Sedan. Echoing the same extraordinary V8 engine and balanced chassis of its sibling - the BMW M3 Coupe - BMW M GmbH has produced the most dynamic and powerful M3 ever designed with a four-door body.
The iconic BMW M3 originally emerged in 1986 as a special edition to qualify for the German Touring Car Championship. Its global popularity and extended track success saw BMW regularly producing updated versions for every 3 Series generation thereafter. The original M3, released in the US in 1988, included a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing a powerful 192 hp.
In 1995, this was succeeded by the second-generation M3 featuring a 3.0-liter (then 3.2-liter) engine producing 240 hp. In 1997 enthusiasts were given the option of the first ever BMW M3 Sedan and soon after, the BMW M3 Convertible also became available. The recent 3 Series model, ranging from 2001 to 2006, incorporated a high capacity 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine which produced a remarkable 333 hp, accompanied by the newly introduced Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) on the US market.
