BMW M5 1984 posters

BMW M5

The BMW M5 made its debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1985. It created an entirely new segment, combining the practical features of a saloon (sedan) with the performance of a sports car. It used a 535i chassis and engine from the BMW M1. When it was first released, the E28 M5 was the fastest production sedan in the world. The cars were constructed by hand in Preußenstrasse/Munich, then later in the Motorsport factory in Daimlerstraße, Garching. The presentation of the 1000th car to Hr and Fr Krampertz from Eichenau took place in May 1987, with Wolfgang Peter Flohr from BMW Motorsport GmbH handing over the keys. Four versions of the M5 were produced: the Left Hand Drive (LHD) Euro Spec car; the UK specification Right Hand Drive (RHD) model; the North American Spec (NA or 1988) variant; and the South African (ZA) Spec RHD car. The Euro Spec and ZA Spec models had the M88/3 engine with 286 bhp DIN (210 kW) of power. The North American 1988 M5, however, had a catalytic converter, reducing the power output to 256 bhp DIN (191 kW). PerformanceAt the time of sale, BMW quoted slow 0-60 times for the E28 M5, in comparison to the heavier and more expensive E24 M635csi. The Euro car had 286 bhp and could reach 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds, with a top speed of 153 mph. The US car had 256 bhp and could reach 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds, with a top speed of 148 mph. Special versions (Hartge)No special versions of the E28 M5 were produced by BMW, but the German tuner Hartge created the Hartge H35S-24, a 330 PS (325 hp/243 kW) version of the car. Improvements included altered cams, a modified exhaust, modified ECU programming, and a revised suspension setup.
