BMW M5

Introduced in 1998 at the Geneva Motor Show, the BMW M5 (E39) was the fastest 4-door sedan in the world at that time. Unlike its predecessors, the E39 M5 was not handbuilt at the BMW M GmbH factory; it was produced on the same assembly line as the normal E39 5-series at the Dingolfing factory in Germany. Production did not begin until late October of that year, and a total of 20,482 M5s were made from 1998 to 2003. BMW M produced three versions of the E39 M5, the European LHD and RHD versions and the North American specification version. This motor vehicle was equipped with a highly tuned V8 engine based on the M62, called the S62, displacing 4.9 liters and producing 400 bhp (294 kW). The engine featured a 7000 RPM redline, Double-VANOS, individual throttle butterflies and came with a Getrag Type D six-speed manual transmission. It had revised suspension than the E39 5 series and four-wheel vented disc brakes. Changes were made to the vehicle over its 5-year production cycle and included redesigned headlights incorporating 'Angel Eye' rings, jeweled tail lights, thicker three-spoke M steering wheel, rear head protection airbags and an upgraded navigation/audio unit. The Euro specification E39 M5 cars was rated at 294 kW (400 hp) and the US at 290 kW (394 hp). 0-60 mph acceleration for the Euro specification was 4.7 seconds, while its top speed was electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). Without the limiter, performance could reach up to 298 km/h (186 mph).
