BMW X3 3.0i

The BMW X3 is a compact luxury crossover SUV designed and manufactured by the German automaker. It is based on the BMW 3-Series automobile platform and designed to rival vehicles such as the Freelander, Lexus RX, and other small luxury SUVs. In 2005, the X3 3.0i won the Canadian Car of the Year Best New Sport Utility Vehicle award. History and Development Motivated by the success of the BMW X5, BMW aimed to build a smaller SAV based on a 3 series platform and resulting in the X3 ( internally known as E83). This was first previewed to the public as the xActivity concept at the Detroit Auto Show in 2003. This concept featured no windows, mainly no roof, and a sleek futuristic interior. The X3 design was made up mainly from pieces from the E39 5 Series parts bin and parts taken directly from the E46 330xi in the making of the X3. Austrian automotive contractor Magna Steyr from Graz, Austria completed additional development work and is contracted to manufacture all first-generation X3s. xDrive When the BMW X3 premiered in late 2003, BMW unveiled its new 4-wheel drive system - xDrive - which would power the X3 and its big brother, the refreshed X5. xDrive replaces the traditional 60-40 (rear-front) power split with a multi-plate clutch located between the gearbox and the Cardan shaft. This gives the car the ability to split power between the front and rear axles in almost any way it pleases. If the vehicle gets into a potentially dangerous situation, xDrive intervenes to maintain the car's traction and stability, aided by the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). xDrive also assists in cornering as it can cut traction to either the two front wheels or two rear wheels to regain stability and keep the driver on the road. Reaction From the beginning, the X3 has been heavily criticised for its harsh ride and poor interior. However, BMW addressed both of these concerns in 2005, with an improved suspension and interior matching that of the X5. Some were also critical of the X3 not being built at a BMW factory. This factory, Magna Steyr, is the highest rated car assembly factory in Europe and has won numerous awards for its quality. The automotive press had various opinions on the X3, but it was nevertheless a popular vehicle with drivers.
