BMW X5 4.4i

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV manufactured by the German automaker BMW since 2000. Based on the E39 5 Series and equipped with all-wheel drive, it offers a selection of straight-6 and V8 gasoline engines. For non-US markets, there is also a 3.0 litre diesel engine. The BMW X5 was designed by Chris Bangle at Designworks studio in California in the late 1990s and the current model closely reflects his initial sketches. The acquisition of the British car company Rover proved to be valuable for BMW in the generation of the X5. Engineers were able to borrow and integrate Range Rover technology and components, such as hill descent control, and the two-piece tailgate from the Range Rover into the X5. Electronic components and various other parts were taken from the E39 5-series parts bin to keep the production costs low. Setting itself apart from the Range Rover models, the X5 was designed to be a sporting automobile. BMW worked hard to ensure it was marketed as a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) rather than a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). Although four-wheeled, the X5 was designed to be similar to BMW's rear-wheel-drive sedans by sending 60% of the engine's torque to the rear wheels. This created a unique driving experience that many other manufactures have since incorporated into their own SUVs, such as Porsche Cayenne. The X5 has been criticized for its lack of interior space given its size. It is smaller than the BMW X3 and 5-series Touring estate when it comes to interior volume. It is expected that the new generation X5 will address this issue.
