The BMW X5 was first introduced in 2000 and has become a mid-size luxury crossover SUV since then. It is based on the well-known E39 5 Series and features all-wheel drive and a number of engines, ranging from straight-6 to V8. Non-US models also feature a 3.0 L diesel engine. Chris Bangle is the designer who created the look of the X5, not much different from initial sketches drawn in the late 1990s in his Designworks studio in California. The takeover of Rover ultimately proved to be highly advantageous for BMW in the development of the X5. Engineers were able to incorporate some technology and parts from the Range Rover, such as hill descent control, ultimately providing the X5 with a design directly inspired by its British counterpart. Additionally, numerous parts and electronics from the E39 5 series were used, likely saved the company a fortune. However, the X5 was developed as an SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), not as an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle). BMW was mindful to provide the vehicle a driving and handling experience similar to its rear-wheel drive sedans, focusing on the splitting of torque where 60% is routed to the rear wheels. The car's "on-road" feel has been praised by a number of experts and has become a benchmark for other manufacturers such as Porsche. Critics point out, however, that the X5 has low interior volume for its size. Unlike the BMW X3 and the 5 Series (Touring), the X5's interior cannot guarantee the same space. The upcoming model is expected to tackle this problem.
