Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Brand Design, describes the new BMW Z4 Coupé as a "Pocket GT," saying that the car "should be considered as a fully-fledged GT car that has been shrink-wrapped around two people." The Z4 Coupe was designed at the same time as the original Z4 Roadster in the late 1990s and shares a common design theme.
Visually, the only difference from the Roadster is the 'double bubble' contoured roof, which serves an aerodynamic purpose as well as offering additional headroom. The side profile is identical to that of the Roadster. A subtle aerodynamic lip spoiler can be seen at the rear of the car, completing the profile.
