BMW Z8

The BMW Z8 is a convertible supercar automobile that was produced by BMW from 2000 to 2003 and was given the E52 BMW model code. It originated from a design prototype created by Henrik Fisker at BMW's Designworks in Southern California. It was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show in 1997 and the massive fan reception led to it being put into limited production. It was featured in the James Bond movie The World Is Not Enough as well as a few video games. There are around 5700 total Z8s built, with around half of them being exported to the United States.

The $130,000 car was equipped with an all aluminum chassis and body as well as a 4.9-liter 32-valve V8 engine that generated 400 horsepower (294 kW) and 500Nm. The engine was made by BMW Motorsport and also featured in the BMW E39 M5. Performance stats add that the car had a 0-100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) acceleration time of 4.7 seconds, which was eventually tested at 4.2 seconds by Motor Trend magazine. Car and Driver magazine compared the Z8 to a benchmark Ferrari 360 Modena and found that it had better acceleration, handling, and braking.

For the 2003 model year, the Z8 was augmented by the Alpina V8 Roadster. It relied on a 5-speed Steptronic-transmission combined with an upgraded 4.8-liter Alpina-tuned V8 engine from the X5 SUV. There were only 550 of these manufactured, and in the USA they were sold directly from BMW dealerships - a first for Alpina.
