Brabus Smart fortwo 2005 posters

Brabus Smart fortwo

The original Smart Fortwo model was introduced in 1998 as the City Coupe, and eventually other models were added to the Smart brand. The concept of the "micro compact car" was designed with urban use in mind, considering space constrictions and the importance of fuel economy in European cities.

Constructed for Safety and Efficiency

In order to achieve a solid frame and adequate passenger safety, the Smart Fortwo is encased with a visible "Tridion" steel frame exterior which protects the passengers from harm and also defines the shape of the car. The body panels are made of interchangeable plastic and with a weight of 730 kg, it is one of the lightest cars on the market. The engine is ones of the defining features of this car, being positioned at the rear and the gasoline model has a 599 cc or 698 cc engine - with 37 kW (50 PS) or 45 kW (61 PS) variants - and the turbodiesel has a 799 cc, 30 kW (41 PS) engine. The Smart Fortwo only has a manual transmission, yet it does not have a clutch pedal. Instead, the gearbox is shifted with the floor-mounted shifter or gear 17 paddles on the steering wheel.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Smart averages 4.7 L/100 km (50 mpg or 21.3 km/L) for the gasoline model and 3.4 L/100 km (69 mpg or 29.4 km/L) for the diesel.

Back-in Parallel Parking

Due to its length of 250 cm, the Smart Fortwo is able to fit into spaces normally taken by one car, so as many as three can fit when parking in the same space. The idea behind this car is to provide people with the ability to back-in into parallel parking zones without being worried about illegally parking and the punishments due to this action. However, it is worth noting that this type of parking is incredibly dangerous, which is why it has been banned in Munich, Germany.

Models

The FORTWO is available in different variants, including the base model "pure", sports model "pulse", luxury top-spec model "passion" and the BRABUS version, all of which can be found in both coupé and cabrio form. There is also the "City Cabrio" with targa-style removable panels, which was restyled in 2002.
