Bugatti EB 164 Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is widely regarded as the fastest, most expensive and powerful street-legal production car in the world, boasting a top speed of over 400km/h (407 km/h or 253 mph). Produced by Volkswagen AG subsidiary Bugatti Automobiles SAS, it was launched in September 2005 and bears the name of legendary racing driver Pierre Veyron, who achieved victory in the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans race. History The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 model was first unveiled as the EB 18/3 "Veyron" concept car at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show. Modified for production by Volkswagen's Hartmut Warkuss rather than Italdesign's Giorgetto Giugiaro, the car debuted with a W18 engine with three banks of six cylinders. Ferdinand Piëch, the VW Chairman, announced the full production plans for the Veyron at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show with a VR6/WR8-style W16 engine, four turbochargers and an output of 1001 horsepower. Top speed was promised at 403 km/h (250.4 mph) and the car was marketed with a €1 million (US$1.3 million then) price tag. Despite some difficulties with stability and the destruction of one prototype, the Veyron was eventually promoted to "advanced concept" status in 2001. In late 2001, Bugatti officially announced the car, now known as the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, for production in 2003. But further challenges arose in development, prompting manufacturer to delay the production start of the Veyron notably due to the difficulties in achieving the required high-speed stability.
