Bugatti Type 57G Tank

In 1936 and 1937, three Type 57G Tanks were built at the Bugatti manufacturing plant in Molsheim, France. Jean Bugatti, son of company founder Ettore Bugatti, had the ambition to win in motor racing, which at the time was dominated by foreign brands. He therefore created a car to compete in long distance competitions, with a type 57S chassis and a 3.3 liter row eight cylinder engine. Thanks to its aerodynamic bodywork, the 57G Tank could achieve a faster speed than its competitors and had 200hp. From its debut, the 57G Tank had great success; Jean-Pierre Wimille was its first race driver. He won the 1936 Grand Prix de l'A.C.F in Montlhéry and the Grand Prix de la Marne. Then for the 1937 Le Mans 24 hour race, two cars were registered; with Wimille and Robert Benoist taking the wheel of the second vehicle. It took the lead and ultimately won the race, with an average speed of 136.99 km/h (84 mph). This was Bugatti's first memorable victory in this legendary race and also launched Wimille to fame as a brand legend.
