For 1936, Buick rebranded its model lineup to recognize the engineering upgrades and design modifications made in comparison to the 1935 models. The Series 40 changing to the Special, the Series 80 becoming the Roadmaster, and the Series 90 - the largest and most high-end model - becoming the Limited, while the Century assumed its place as the Series 60. The 1936–42 Centuries were created by uniting shorter wheelbase Buick Special bodies with the eight-cylinder engine. While the Special was powered by an engine of 233 in³ and offering 93 hp at 3200 rpm, the Centuries, during this period, were provided with a powerful 320.2 in³ motor delivering 120 hp, allowing these Buicks to reach speeds over 95 mph and being given the nickname “banker's hotrod”.
