Buick Regal Cielo Concept
The 2000 Buick Regal is the base of the Regal Cielo concept car, an open-air vehicle that has the potential of becoming a limited-edition production model. This car drew inspiration from the Cielo concept car, which was presented at the 1999 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and is pronounced “see-A-low”, meaning “sky” in Spanish. It was unveiled in January 2000 at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show.
"This is a translation of the most significant feature of the Cielo concept car directly into a potential production application," said Mark D. Hines, Regal brand manager. "Although Regal Cielo is technically a concept car, it is clearly a vehicle that can be built."
The prominent feature would be its innovative retractable hard top, wherein the two roof panels separate and move back and down along the two roof rails when the top is lowered. This design can be configured in three ways: having a rail-to-rail open sunroof, lowering the entire top and rear window, or lowering just the rear window. Moreover, unlike the original Cielo, the roof panels on the Regal Cielo stow vertically, leaving more usable trunk space.
The car also features a two-tone pearlescent platinum three-coat paint scheme, special 17-inch wheels and tires with Baer racing brakes, cladding at the bottom of the car, a specific body-color grille with air intakes for cooling the front brake discs, Cielo badging on the right taillamp and front door panels, and a “stinger” spoiler extending across the trunk lid blending into the rear fenders. Plus, a hinged tonneau cover is located behind the rear window and contains a high-mounted neon brake light and turn signals.
Under the hood, it has the power of a Regal GS, with a supercharged 3800 Series II V-6 engine providing 240 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm.
"Regal Cielo is another step towards providing a safe, practical and versatile convertible for the family," said Hines.
