Cadillac Escalade
The Cadillac Escalade is a full-size luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) manufactured by General Motors' luxury brand. It was the division's first venture into the highly popular SUV market and was introduced for the 1999 model year in response to competition from German and Japanese automakers and Ford's launch of the Lincoln Navigator the year prior. It was developed quickly, with production beginning only 10 months after project approval. After the discontinuation of the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham sedan in 1996, the Escalade began to occupy the void left by the limousine industry.
The Escalade was originally based on the GMC Yukon Denali, but underwent major revisions for the 2002 model year to better align its look with Cadillac's overall design aesthetic. It wasn't the first Cadillac to be based on a Chevrolet model, though – both the first-generation Seville and mid-1980s Cimarron were based on entry-level Chevrolet vehicles (the Nova and Cavalier, respectively).
The Escalade and Escalade EXT pickup are the only current Cadillac vehicles produced outside of the United States, as the European-built Cadillac Catera had been discontinued in 2001. Before the 2006 redesign, the Escalade ESV (an even more luxurious version of the Chevrolet Suburban) and Escalade EXT were both made in the Mexican city of Silao. Today, both are made in Arlington, TX.
After-market customization of the Escalade is popular, with affluent customers often investing in larger wheels, increased engine performance, custom paint jobs, and other tweaks. While Cadillac dealers will not do such customizations directly, they can often be done through third-party companies. The Escalade has become a frequent target of car thieves, being the most frequently stolen vehicle from 2001-2003 according to the Highway Loss Data Institute.
