Chevrolet Astro 1999 posters

Chevrolet Astro

The Chevrolet Astro was introduced in 1985 as a mid-sized van, competing with other domestic vans like the Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager twins and the Ford Aerostar. It was built on the same truck-based platform as the GMC Safari, and both vans earned a great reputation, being popular with large families, conversion companies, and commercial businesses. Pontiac and GMC had also used the Safari nameplate from 1955 to 1989. The Astro and Safari vans were available at the same time from 1985 to 1989. Though many people still refer to it as a minivan, it is larger than a Chevy Venture and smaller than a Chevy Express. It is also the only minivan besides the Ford Aerostar to have rear-wheel drive, making it more truck-like than most minivans. Due to its truck-like platform, the Astro and Safari had great towing capabilities – up to 6,000 lb with the right equipments. Car-based, front-wheel drive minivans can usually only tow up to 3,500 lb. The Astro came with either a 160 or 190 hp engine, and could seat up to 8 passengers. It was a highly popular vehicle in Japan, even though it was only offered in left-hand drive. To commemorate the last year of production, a limited edition run of the final production models of the Astro was released in Japan in 2005.
