The Chevrolet Avalanche is Chevrolet's top-of-the-line pickup. It is designed with a blend of typical pickup truck design with SUV characteristics, making it a "sport utility truck". Based on the full-size, long-wheelbase General Motors SUVs (such as the Chevrolet Suburban), the Avalanche serves as the foundation for the upscale Cadillac Escalade EXT.
This four-door, six-seat pickup truck features four full-size hinged doors with seating for five or six passengers (with bench seats). The open pickup bed in back can be extended into the cabin area by folding down the rear wall and removing the rear window. This design is known as the "mid-gate system" and also provides additional storage points accessible by locking flip-top panels, suitable for use as self-draining ice chests. Frosty beverages, anyone?
Avalanche's midgate construction allows two full-size sleeping bags to be laid out in the bed, providing weather protection for the occupants when needed. This feature, alongside other features such as optional four-wheel drive, makes the truck an attractive choice for active outdoor adventurers. But it doesn't end there - the truck's construction has made it a popular choice for hip-hop customisations. It's not uncommon to see Avalanches adorned with bigger wheels upwards of 26" in diameter and powerful sound systems.
First generation Avalanches were launched in 2001 as a 2002 model on the GMT800 platform. Early model Avalanches featured light grey plastic body cladding, facilitating visual distinction from the Suburban. From mid-year, Avalanches could be ordered without the cladding. Generating a lot of buzz and garnering several notable awards and nominations - including the North American Truck of the Year award and Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year for 2003 - the Avalanche has enjoyed success. Available engine options include the Vortec 5.3L V8 producing 290hp and 8.1L V8 with 325hp. Drivetrains are rear- wheel drive or four-wheel drive with selectable high/low.
