Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle
In 2011, a brand new Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV) will join law enforcement departments throughout North America. It is a modern, full-size, rear-drive sedan that provides both V-8 and V-6 engines with special equipment and features. The announcement was made at the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police conference held in Denver, Colorado. The Caprice PPV will be accessible for ordering in the coming year and expected to hit the streets early in 2011.
"The new Chevrolet Caprice police car is an ideal vehicle for law enforcement," asserted Jim Campbell, general manager for GM Fleet and Commercial Operations. "We asked for input from police customers to help in developing a vehicle that outperforms the Crown Victoria in many ways." Vice President of the Global Chevrolet Brand Brent Dewar added, “Chevrolet offers Impala, Tahoe, and the Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle to give police and special service departments an array of choices.”
Unlike other police auto models already out there, the Caprice PPV was not derived from any "civilian" passenger-car model found in North America. It was precisely designed for law enforcement with these features:
- Powerful 6.0L V-8 with fuel-saving Active Fuel Management technology and E85 capability for expected best-in-class 0-60 acceleration (sub six seconds) and top speed; a V-6 engine is offered in the 2012 model year
- Optional front-seat-only side curtain air bags with full-width rear-seat barrier for increased officer safety
- Two trunk-mounted batteries, with one of them offering power to certain police equipment
- Designed for five-passenger seating with an upper-center section for equipment mounting without disrupting air bag deployment
- Capability of utilizing in-dash touch-screen computer technology
- Special front seats to accommodate the weight of a typical equipment belt plus additional comfort for officers using the patrol car as their office
