The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car that was first launched in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It succeeded the Cavalier and the Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car and was made available as both a coupe and a sedan. The Cobalt is based on the GM Delta Platform, also used for the Chevrolet HHR and Saturn Ion. One edition of the Cobalt was the Super Sport (SS) variant, which had higher performance. Pontiac also made a car based on the Cobalt, the Pontiac G5, which was marketed across the US, Mexico, and Canada. It replaced the Cavalier-derived Pontiac Sunfire. The Cobalt in the US only came as a coupe while the G5 was available as both a coupe and a sedan. The Cobalt and its Pontiac equivalent were both produced at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and in Lordstown, Ohio. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Cobalt is categorized as a subcompact car. Specifications The Cobalt has a MacPherson strut suspensions in its front and a semi-independent torsion beam in the rear. Its wheelbase is 103.3 inches (2,624 mm) and it has a width of 68.4 inches (1,737 mm). It has a weight of 2,681 lbs (1,216 kg) for the coupe and 2,747 lbs (1,246 kg) for the sedan. Its EPA fuel economy for 2009 is 24 mpg-US (9.8 L/100 km; 29 mpg-imp) city/34 mpg-US (6.9 L/100 km; 41 mpg-imp) highway with automatic transmission and 26 mpg-US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg-imp) city/37 mpg-US (6.4 L/100 km; 44 mpg-imp) highway with manual transmission. Its engine output is 155 hp (116 kW).
