The Chevrolet Cobalt was introduced for the 2005 model year to replace the Cavalier and Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. It was based on the GM Delta platform, shared with the Chevrolet HHR and Saturn Ion. The Cobalt had a Pontiac version, sold primarily as the Pontiac G5 in Canada, the Pontiac Pursuit and then Pontiac G5 Pursuit in Mexico, and under the G5 name in the US. For 2009, US EPA fuel economy was increased to 24-34 mpg (city/highway) for automatic transmission and 26-37 mpg for manual transmission. The engine output was increased to 155 hp (116 kW).

The Cobalt is classified as a subcompact car by the US EPA and has a wheelbase of 103.3 in, wider than its competitors, and a weight of 2,681 lb (coupe) or 2,747 lb (sedan). It features an independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and a semi-independent torsion beam in the rear.
