Chevrolet Corvette

The Chevrolet Corvette C5 was a major redesign from its predecessor, the C4. The C5 featured a hydroformed box frame and a transmission located at the rear of the car, creating an integrated transaxle assembly that was connected to the LS1 engine via a torque tube. This engine/transmission arrangement gave the C5 a 50-50 (percentage, front-to-rear) weight distribution for improved handling. The LS1 engine had an initial output of 345 hp (257 kW), which was increased to 350 hp (261 kW) in 2001. To match the engine, a Borg-Warner T-56 6-speed manual transmission was chosen and it allowed the C5 to hit a top speed of 175 mph (282 km/h). Compared to the C4, the C5's platform and design eliminated most squeaks and rattles. In the 1997 model year, the fastback coupé was offered as the only body style. The convertible followed a year later, and in 1998, it served as the pace car for the Indianapolis 500. Additionally, the 1998 Corvette was named "Motor Trend Car of The Year". Between 1999 and 2004, the C5 Corvette also paced the Indianapolis 500, but no replica pace versions were available. In 1999, a hardtop body style was added, and it had a fixed roof with a similar roofline and trunk space as the convertible and a notchback-style rear window.
