The fifth-generation of the iconic Chevrolet Corvette, known as the C5, saw a major change from its predecessor - the C4. The C5 included an upgraded hydroformed box frame, an improved structural platform - particularly for convertible and targa-style bodies. To further enhance the car's handling capabilities, the transmission was relocated to the rear and coupled with the all-new LS1 engine via a torque tube - enabling a 50-50 (percentage, front-rear) weight distribution. The engine initially produced 345 hp (257 kW), but was increased to 350 hp (261 kW) in 2001. The 4L60-E automatic transmission carried over from the previous model, while the manual was replaced by a Borg-Warner T-56 6-speed capable of a 175 mph (282 km/h) top speed. The new platform and structural design also drastically decreased the C5's sound of creaks and rattles compared to the C4. In 1997, the C5 was offered as a fastback coupe - with a convertible following in the model year of 1998. The 1998 Corvette even served as the official pace car for the Indianapolis 500. Subsequently, C5 Corvettes paced the 2002 and 2004 Indianapolis 500 races as well. 1999 saw the C5's third body style being offered to the public - the hardtop, or 'fixed-roof coupe', with a fixed top and roofline, as well as a distinct notchback-style rear window.
