The fifth generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, the C5, represented a major leap forward from its predecessor, the C4. Featuring a hydroformed box frame and an engine/transmission arrangement designed to provide a 50/50 front-rear weight distribution, the C5 featured an all-new LS1 engine that produced up to 350 hp (261 kW). It was mated to a Borg Warner T-56 6-speed manual transmission, providing a top speed of 175 mph (282 km/h). Structurally, the C5 was much stiffer than the C4, reducing squeaks and rattles. When initially released in 1997, only the fastback coupé was available. The convertible followed in 1998, and the hardtop (also known as the "fixed-roof coupé" or "FRC") was added to the lineup in 1999. In 1998, a replica C5 Corvette paced the Indianapolis 500; the car was also named Motor Trend Car of the Year. The C5 also subsequently paced the 2002 and 2004 Indianapolis 500s, although no replica pace car versions were sold during those model years.
