Chevrolet Corvette C5

The Chevrolet Corvette C5, the fifth generation of Corvettes built and marketed by Chevrolet, was first produced in 1997 and continued until the 2004 model year. Compared to its predecessor, the C5 was a radical departure, featuring a hydroformed box frame, a rear-integrated transaxle transmission and a torque tube connected to the engine. Opting for a Borg-Warner T-56 manual transmission in place of the 4L60E, the C5 removed a number of the rattles and squeaks that had previously plagued the C4. This, combined with the strong frame, made the C5 a much improved model. Z06 A continuation of the earlier ZR-1, the Z06 was introduced in 2001 and drew its name from the high performance 1960s C2 Corvette Z06. Rather than a DOHC engine like the ZR-1, the Z06 was powered by an LS6 version of the standard LS1 engine developing 385 hp (287 kW). This, when combined with its lighter build, meant the Z06 had notably superior performance to the ZR-1 in all areas except top speed. In order to maximize the power of the increased output, Chevrolet added upgrades to the suspension, brake cooling ducts, wheels and tires, and a six-speed manual transmission to the package. With the implementation of a titanium exhaust, thinner glass, lighter wheels and a lighter battery, from 2002 the Z06 had a 106 lb (48 kg) advantage in weight over the standard C5, and at the same time increased engine output to 405 hp (302 kW).
