Chevrolet Corvette C5-R

The Chevrolet Corvette C5-R is a grand touring race car developed as a joint venture between Pratt & Miller and Chevrolet designed specifically for motor sport endurance racing. Originally conceptualised in 1999, the C5-R achieved monumental success for Chevrolet in such events as the 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Le Mans and winning the American Le Mans Series championship. Although the C5-R has been replaced by the C6.R, it continues to be raced on tracks around the world to this day.

Development

In an effort to compete with automobiles from Dodge and Porsche which were already dominating the grand touring racing world, GM started the project of creating their own race car from its fifth generation Corvette C5 model. The task of designing and constructing the cars was entrusted to the Pratt & Miller Group, with additional assistance from Riley & Scott who maintained a second racing team during the initial term. The regulations of the time meant that the C5-R had to be based on the Corvette road car, prompting GM and Pratt & Miller to use modified mules to test out the car's engines and other components.
