Chevrolet Corvette Z06

The fifth-generation Chevrolet Corvette, the C5, introduced in 1997, brought many changes to the model. Compared to its predecessor, the C4, the C5 featured a hydroformed box frame for vastly improved structural support, especially for a convertible body style having the transmission moved to the rear. It was coupled with the all-new LS1 engine via a torque tube, resulting in a 50-50 weight distribution for enhanced handling. The LS1 engine initially delivered 345 horsepower (257 kW), and was further increased to 350 horsepower (261 kW) in 2001. The accompanying 4L60-E automatic transmission was taken over from the previous C4 model, while its manual transmission replaced by the Borg-Warner T-56 6-speed, capable of reaching a top speed of 175 mph (282 km/h). Generally, the C5 was structurally much more sound than its predecessor, helping reduce squeaks, rattles, and similar issues. In the first model year of 1997, Corvettes were sold as fastback coupés, while the convertible models came in 1998. 1998 saw the C5 convertible pace the Indianapolis 500 and a replica pace car edition was released, and "Motor Trend Car of the Year" awarded to the 1998 Corvette. The 2002 and 2004 Indianapolis 500s featured the C5 Corvette as its pace car too, but no replica pace car versions were offered during these model years. The 1999 model year saw the addition of the hardtop body style, also referred to as the "fixed-roof coupé" or "FRC"--featuring a sealed top with a roofline shape and trunk space akin to the convertible, as well as a distinct notchback-style rear window.
