Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Commemorative Edition

The C5 Corvette marked a major departure from its predecessor, the C4. With a hydroformed box frame and transmission relocated to the rear, it offered an improved structural platform, especially for the convertible body style. To enhance the car's handling, a torque tube connected the LS1 engine to the rear-mounted transaxle assembly, yielding a perfect 50-50 weight distribution. Puttin out 345 hp (257 kW) initially, the engine was upgraded in 2001 to 350 hp (261 kW), and matched to a Borg-Warner T-56 6-speed manual transmission for a top speed of 175 mph (282 km/h). The body structure was designed to reduce squeaks and rattles, while the 4L60-E automatic transmission was retained from previous models. For the model's debut in 1997, it was offered only as a fastback coupé. A convertible was made available the following year, and in 1999, a third body style - the hardtop or FRC - was added. Boasting a fixed top and a roofline with trunk space similar to that of the convertible, it also featured a distinct notchback-style rear window. The model car had its moment of glory in 1998 when it was chosen as "Motor Trend Car of the Year", before going on to pace the Indianapolis 500 in 1998, 2002 and 2004.
