Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Daytona 500 Pace Car

LOS ANGELES - On Feb. 19th, the 48th edition of the prestigious Daytona 500 NASCAR race will begin with a specially outfitted 2006 Corvette Z06 as the official pace car. Famous auto enthusiast, Tonight Show host Jay Leno, will be at the wheel of this magnificent car.

This will be the second-straight year that a Corvette model is chosen to serve as the Daytona 500 pace car. On behalf of Chevrolet, General Manager Ed Peper expressed the honor "to have Corvette serve once again as the Daytona 500 pace car," noting the "long, successful history at Daytona" of the company. The Corvette Z06 is Chevrolet and General Motors' speediest offering, with an all-aluminum, racing-inspired 7.0L engine under the hood which generates 505 horsepower (377 kW) and an astounding 470 lb.-ft. (637 Nm) of torque. This supercar can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of an impressive 198 mph.

One thing that sets the Z06 apart from the other Chevy Corvettes on sale is its use of lightweight materials, like carbon-fiber front fenders and a chassis built with aluminum and magnesium. The car also comes with a performance-oriented suspension and large 18-inch front and 19-inch back wheels, which makes it stable on the road. As the Daytona 500 pace car, it is equipped with special safety features and vivid strobe lights.
