Chevrolet Impala LS 2003 posters

Chevrolet Impala LS

The Impala name returned in 2000 with the "Hi-Mid" program replacing the Lumina. Based on the Lumina's W-body platform, it was assembled at Oshawa Car Assembly in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. The latest Impala came with a choice of three V6 engines: two 3.8L and a slightly smaller 3.4L. A supercharged V6 engine was added in 2004 for the SS trim level.

For the first three years of production, the Impala was available in two trim levels. The base model had 180 horsepower 3.4L LA1 V6 engine, 3-gauge instrument cluster, cloth bench seats and steel wheels. The LS had upgraded interior with cloth bucket seats, color-keyed trim, aluminum wheels, 4-gauge instrument cluster, 200 horsepower 3.8L L36 V6 engine, anti-lock brakes, traction control system, integrated foglamps, and a rear spoiler which was available as an option on base models. Additional options across all variants included a sunroof, OnStar system, Driver Information Center with HomeLink, heated power front seats, and 1990s-style 16-inch SS wheels. All Impalas came with power windows, door locks and mirrors.

The 2004-2005 Impala SS boasted a 3.8L supercharged L67 V6 engine with 240 horsepower. This engine had previously featured in such models as the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, Buick Regal GS, Buick Riviera and Pontiac Bonneville SSEI. Despite being front-wheel-drive, the Impala had similar performance to the former rear-wheel-drive 1990s Impala SS, with 0-60 mph times in under 6.5 seconds. To celebrate the relationship between Chevrolet and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a limited edition (4,088 produced) 2004 Impala Indy SS was released with a black grille, gold Chevrolet bowtie emblem carried over to all 2005 Impalas, various Indy logos on the exterior and interior, 17-inch chrome wheels and other features.

Impala 9C1 and 9C3

Exclusively available to law enforcement and fire departments, the 9C1 and 9C3 trims of the Impala was released in 2000 and 2001 respectively. The 9C1 was a base model with the 3.8L V6 engine and stronger suspension, only coming in limited colors. The 9C3 was similarly equipped, but with added convenience features and paint and interior options. One feature of the 9C1 was the “SURV MODE” switch, replacing the fog light switch on the LS and allowing the driver to turn off all lights and "hide" - something not offered on civilian models as automatic headlights were fitted.
