Chevrolet Impala SS
The Impala name was revived for the 2000 model year to replace the Lumina. Built on the same W-body platform, the new Impala was offered in two trim levels and powered by a choice of two 3.8L V6 engines or a 3.4L V6. For the 2004 model year, a new Impala SS with a supercharged V6 was made available.
The base Impala model was outfitted with cloth bench seats, a 180 horsepower (130 kW) 3.4L LA1 V6 engine, and a 3-gauge instrument cluster. The LS trim level included cloth bucket seats, anti-lock brakes, traction control system, keyless remote entry, integrated fog lamps, aluminum wheels, and a 4-gauge instrument cluster. The optional sunroof, OnStar system, Driver Information Center with built-in HomeLink system, heated power front seats, and 16-inch 1990s SS-inspired wheels were available on all trims.
The 2004 to 2005 Impala SS was powered by a 3.8L supercharged L67 V6 engine, rated at 240 horsepower (180 kW). This powerful sedan was almost as quick as its more illustrious predecessor, with a 0-60-mile-per-hour (0-97 km/h) time of 6.5 seconds. To commemorate Chevrolet's connection with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500 race, Chevrolet offered a special edition Impala Indy SS in 2004, featuring distinctive black grille with gold Chevrolet bowtie emblem, Indy logos on the exterior and interior, and 17-inch chrome wheels.
In addition, special versions of the Impala, namely the Police Package (9C1) and Undercover Police Package (9C3), were made available to police, fire departments, and EMS agencies. The 9C1 was outfitted with a strong suspension and the 3.8L V6, as well as with a 'SURV MODE' switch that replaced the original fog light switch found on the LS. The 9C3 was comparably equipped to the 9C1 but with more convenience options and more paint and interior choices.
