Chevrolet Impala Super Sport

The Chevrolet Impala Super Sport (SS) was introduced in 1958 as a sporty package for Bel Air coupes and convertibles, distinguished by its six taillights and named after the southern African antelope. The Impala quickly became the best-selling car in Chevrolet's product lineup and the top-selling car in the United States in 1960, selling more than 13 million units until 1996. The Impala Caprice was introduced in 1965 with unique upholstery, dash accents, and specialty pulls on the doors. In 1966 Chevy replaced the Impala name with the Caprice, but the Impala would continue to be the brand's top-selling model until late 1970s. The 1971 redesign marked the introduction of the largest Impala to date, while the 1961 model is credited with starting the "muscle car era" of powerful, sporty cars. The Impala SS came with the Z24 option package, offering the Turbo-Jet 427 in³ V8 in either L36 or L72 variations with SS427 badging. With the exception of 1969, the SS was an appearance package only until the Impala SS became its own series in 1964. In 1969, the Impala SS was available as the Z24 (SS427) with a 427 in³ V8 of 390 or 425 hp. This was the last year of the Impala SS until its revival in 1994.
