Chevrolet Sail

Shanghai GM has unveiled the new Chevrolet Sail sedan, the first passenger car created in China by a Sino-foreign joint venture. This small car was developed jointly by the GM and SAIC-controlled ventures, Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC). Apart from sales in the Chinese market, the vehicle will make its entry into other emerging markets as well. The base model of the five variants of the Chevrolet Sail is priced at approximately RMB 60,000 (approx. US$8,800). With this, the company has made a breakthrough in the small car segment that used to be dominated by Chinese brands with vehicles under RMB 70,000 (approx. US$10,300). According to Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group, "Our mission has always been to make owning a car easier for individuals and families. The Chevrolet Sail raises the bar for the low-end small car segment, offering a product that is both great value and meets global standards of the renowned Chevrolet brand. The fact that the Sail will be exported is an accolade to the product development achieved by our teams in China." Class-Leading, Fuel-Efficient Powertrains Customers can choose from two class-leading 1.2-liter S-TEC II and 1.4-liter S-TEC III engines in the Chevrolet Sail. The smaller engine is rated 5.7 L/100 km and delivers power at 53.1 kW/L, enabling the car to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.9 seconds. The larger engine has a fuel efficiency of 5.9 L/100 km and is capable of producing 54.3 kW/L power, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds.
