Chevrolet Venture
The Chevrolet Venture was a minivan produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1997 to 2004 model years. It replaced the Chevrolet Lumina APV and was visually identical to the Opel Sintra, sold in Europe, and the Vauxhall, sold in the UK. Opel also assisted in the vehicle's development. During the 2004 model year, the Venture and the Astro were replaced with the newly designed Chevrolet Uplander. The Venture and other GM minivans were built in Doraville, Georgia.
History
The Venture hit the market in 1996 for the 1997 model year, taking the place of the GM's Lumina APV. In the US, the minivan was also sold as the Oldsmobile Silhouette and the Pontiac Trans Sport (renamed the Pontiac Montana in 1999). The Venture and related models featured the GM 3400 V6 engine - initially outputting 180 horsepower - which was increased to 185 hp in 1999. In 2000, a Warner Brothers edition of the Venture was released, boasting a DVD entertainment system - a novel feature at the time. The exterior was refreshed in 2001 and the option for all-wheel drive came in 2002. Reception for the Venture was generally lukewarm with critics noting its notoriously narrow cabin design based off of European road dimensions. Both short and long wheelbase versions were available, as was an optional AWD model similar to those found on Chrysler minivans. The third row of seats could be folded flat to form a higher floor, unlike Hondas and Mazdas of the time which folded completely into wells behind the third row.
After 2005, the Venture was replaced by the Uplander, a facelift of the Venture featuring a longer nose for better crush safer crash test ratings, and a more SUV-like styling. Only the long-wheelbase Venture was available in the 2005 model year.
