Chevrolet Volt Concept

With an aggressive, athletic design, the Chevrolet Volt concept sedan seeks to nearly eliminate trips to the gas station. Powered by GM's next-generation electric propulsion system - the E-flex System - the Volt is equipped as a battery-powered, four-passenger electric vehicle that uses a gas engine to create additional electricity to extend its range. Drawing on GM's experience of launching the modern electric vehicle market with the EV1 in 1996, Vice Chairman Robert A. Lutz noted the Volt solves the issues the EV1 had of limited range, room, and energy. He explained, "You can climb a hill or turn on the air conditioning and not worry about it." Able to be fully charged through a 110-volt outlet for around six hours, the Volt can provide its passengers with over 60 city kilometers of pure electric range. Once the battery's energy is depleted, a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder turbocharged engine begins to spin, producing electricity to replenish the battery and increasing its range and fuel economy.
