Citroen DS 19

The Citroën DS (also known as Déesse, or Goddess) was a pioneering automobile manufactured by the French company, Citroën, between 1955 and 1975. In its 20-year lifetime, Citroën sold almost 1.5 million of these vehicles. Known for its avant-garde design and groundbreaking technology – including its hydro-pneumatic self-leveling suspension system – the DS pushed the boundaries in terms of comfort, road handling, performance, and braking. The DS made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 1955, where its modernist appearance and innovative features captured the public's imagination – and resulted in 743 orders in the first 15 minutes alone. The model was praised for its perfect balance of ride and handling, which was lightyears ahead of that of rival vehicles. For those looking for a more economical version, the ID (In French: Idée, meaning 'Idea') was released two years later in 1957. This model featured the same body configuration as the DS, but was equipped with a conventional clutch and transmission, as well as no power-steering. The ID Break, a station-wagon variant, followed in 1958.
