Citroen DS 19 Cabrio

The Citroën DS (also known as Déesse, or Goddess, after the punning initials in French) was an automobile produced by the French manufacturer Citroën between 1955 and 1975. The DS is renowned both for its revolutionary, aerodynamic body design and its imaginative technology, such as its hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension system. With the DS, Citroën were ahead of their time, setting the standard for ride quality, roadholding, handling, and braking performance of any vehicle. The car's body design was viewed as futuristic upon its release in 1955 and this look is still admired more than 60 years later. It sold nearly 1.5 million D-series during its 20 years of production.

Model history

The highly anticipated Citroën DS 19 was launched at the Paris Motor Show in October 1955 and orders for the day totaled 12,000--an impressive number considering the expensive price tag at the time. The DS was not only impressive in terms of its technology, it also brought a whole new definition to the ride vs. handling compromise possible in a motor vehicle. To cater to more cost-conscious buyers, the ID (French for Idea) submodel was introduced in 1957. The ID had the same body as the DS, but with a conventional transmission and clutch and no power steering (though it was added as an option later). In 1958, a station wagon variant of the ID, the ID Break, was also released.
