Citroen DS 21 Berline

The iconic Citroën DS (also nicknamed Déesse, or 'Goddess' in French for its punning initials) was a revolutionary automobile produced by the French manufacturer between 1955 and 1975, with nearly 1.5 million models sold over its 20 years of production. The DS is widely known for its futuristic body design and unique features, such as its hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension system, both of which allow it to achieve standards of ride comfort, road holding, handling, and braking far beyond those of other cars, a performance that caused competitors to take decades to match. Its aerodynamic body lines gave it a modern, sleek look that has become popular decades later. Model history The DS 19, designed as the successor to the classic Traction Avant, was first revealed at the Paris Motor Show on October 5, 1955 to much excitement; 743 orders were taken within the first 15 minutes, and 12,000 on the first day. It soon became a much-beloved car for its excellent combination of ride and handling. The high market price hindered sales in a country still recovering from WWII, leading to the release of a lower-priced version, the ID (Idée in French for 'Idea'). It kept the same body as the DS but had more traditional under-the-hood features, including a manual transmission and no power steering. It was later joined by the ID Break station wagon variant which was released in 1958.
