Citroen Traction Avant 11B Cabrio

The innovative Citroën Traction Avant 11B Cabrio was the first large-scale front wheel drive automobile manufactured by the French automaker Citroën. From 1934 to 1957, a total of 760,000 units were produced. Designed by André Lefèbvre and Flaminio Bertoni at the start of 1934, the car featured an arc-welded monocoque chassis, which was highly unusual for the time - most cars then layered a frame with body work. This new method enabled lighter vehicles, which is now commonplace in vehicle engineering. Due to skepticism around its strength, the car's resilience was tested by having it driven off a cliff. The Cabrio had a sharp, low-slung shape which became even more eye-catching when compared to cars from the era. It was further advanced by having independently sprung front wheels by torsion bar and wishbone suspension, a departure from other live axle and cart-type leaf spring designs. Plus, with its light frame, the Cabrio was able to hit speeds of 100 km/h (62 mph) while consuming only 10 litres of fuel every 100 km (24 mpg).
