The history of the company starts in 1886, when Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz patented the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, the first automobile in the world. It was a three-wheeled automobile with a rear-mounted engine. Benz & Company and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft AG continued to produce cars separately till 1926, when they merged into Daimler-Benz AG. It was then, when it was decided to name all the company’s cars Mercedes-Benz.
In 1998, Daimler-Benz and American Chrysler Corporation announced about their merger and the creation of DaimlerChrysler AG. In 2007, Daimler sold 80,1 % of Chrysler Group to Cerberus Capital Management and remained an owner of 19.9% stake in it. The same year, Daimler AG became the new name of the company.
Daimler owns such brands as Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, Smart, Maybach, Freightliner, Mitsubishi Fuso, Thomas Built Buses, Western Star, BharatBenz and Setra. In addition, it holds shares in many companies, among which are Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation of Canada, Engine Holding, Denza, KAMAZ, Aston Martin and Tesla.
Moreover, Daimler AG is involved into different projects, connected with alternative fuels development. For example, it works at using of semi-evergreen shrub jatropha curcas as a biofuel, develops electric cars (Smart electric drive) and charging stations for them as well as hybrids, the first model of which was the Mercedes-Benz S-Class 400 Hybrid.
