Today, Chrysler Group announced that the Dodge Avenger will be competing in select NASCAR Nextel Cup events beginning in 2007, joining the Dodge Charger in Dodge's racing lineup. At the North American International Auto Show, the 2008 Dodge Avenger racing car made its debut alongside the regular Dodge Avenger vehicle, which offers bold styling, innovative interior features, dependable safety, thrilling performance, and outstanding fuel efficiency of 32 mpg (EPA 2007 standards). Elliott Sadler, Kurt Busch, and newcomer Juan Pablo Montoya from the Dodge Dealers/UAW Evernham Motorsports, Penske Racing South, and Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates teams were all present at the announcement. Mike Accavitti, Director of Dodge Motorsports and SRT Product Planning from Chrysler Group had this to say: “It makes perfect sense for the Avenger to become part of the Dodge NASCAR racing family, as Dodge is all about delivering powerful performance.” The debut race for the Dodge Avenger race car is slated to take place at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 25, 2007, coinciding with the beginning of the NASCAR “Car of Tomorrow” project. This three-year long venture involves NASCAR, manufacturers, teams, and industry suppliers collaborating to create a safer and more cost-effective race car. During the phase-in of the “Car of Tomorrow”, the Dodge Charger will remain in NASCAR Nextel Cup competition.
