Dodge Caravan

The Dodge Caravan and Dodge Grand Caravan are minivans manufactured by DaimlerChrysler and introduced in 1983 for the 1984 model year along with its sister model, the Plymouth Voyager. These were the first modern minivans, credited with having created this entire market segment. The Chrysler twins were launched ahead of the Renault Espace, making them the first of their kind however, they didn't offer the interior versatility of the first generation Espace until later generations. These Chrysler minivans have been the best-selling minivans in the United States ever since. The first generation Caravans used the Chrysler S platform which was based on the K-cars, the Plymouth Reliant and Dodge Aries. Three trim levels were available: base, mainstream SE, and upscale LE. Car and Driver magazine placed the 1985 Caravan on its Ten Best list. Transmission options included a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic and a five-speed manual transmission with four-cylinder engines including the turbocharged 2.5L (a rare combination). It also introduced the cargo version of the Caravan, called the Mini Ram Van and renamed as the Caravan C/V for 1989, and later discontinued in 1995; 1989-1990 turbocharged models are highly sought after by collectors.
