Dodge Charger Daytona

In 1969, NASCAR decreed that all cars raced in their competition had to have a public version with at least 500 copies slated for sale. This prompted Dodge to develop a new and highly desirable model - the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. An 18 inch pointed nose adjoined the car, helping with the aerodynamics but leaving the rear end vulnerable to lifting at high speeds. To remedy this, a tall wing was affixed over the trunk, earning this and its 1970 Plymouth Superbird counterpart the moniker of "wing cars". Small modifications to the fenders and hood with the addition of scoops for tire rub gave the Charger Daytona a powerful aesthetic touch. Only 503 of the cars were made with either a 440 Magnum or 426 Hemi engine. All versions had "Daytona" stripes of three distinct colors – red, black, and white – and the wing featured a paint job of the same hue. The remarkable success of the Daytona in NASCAR saw its supremacy truncated by the introduction of a new restriction to the 1971 season, which limited all "aero" cars to a maximum engine displacement of 5.0 L (305 in³).
